TRE® (Tension, Stress & Trauma Release Exercise) is an innovative series of exercises that assist the body in releasing deep muscular patterns of stress, tension and trauma. Created by Dr. David Berceli, PhD, TRE® safely activates a natural reflex mechanism of shaking or vibrating that releases muscular tension, calming down the nervous system. When this muscular shaking/vibrating mechanism is activated in a safe and controlled environment, the body is encouraged to return back to a state of balance.

These exercises are easily learned, immediately effective and self-empowering. TRE® is suitable for all ages, all states of health and fitness.

It is practiced under the supervision and guidance of a qualified TRE® Practitioner and may be done during individual sessions or as part of a group class. It is a great self-help tool for people who experience daily stress, anxiety, tension or have experienced trauma.

The TRE process should not be used as a substitute for trauma recovery procedures of a medical or psychiatric/psychological nature. Individuals who have physical or psychological conditions that require strict regulation, individuals with fragile psychological defenses, a complex history of trauma or restricting physical or medical limitations should consult their medical practitioner or a Certified TRE Provider prior to performing these exercises.

My Own Journey with TRE

Childhood trauma and the effects of chronic long term stress left me with a diminished ability to cope. Several accidents resulting in spinal injuries further affected my posture and breathing. Eventually the debilitating muscle tension, pain and fatigue caused me to feel that I was just surviving life without any capacity for joy.
TRE helped my body relax physically and emotionally I became more balanced and peaceful. With continued practice I felt lighter and more joyful. My posture improved dramatically and I have been able to maintain it with ease. I no longer live with constant pain and have developed a greater sense of body awareness which enables me to listen to my body’s inner wisdom and act on its queues. My energy levels are excellent and I now possess the resources to deal with stressful situations and conflict more positively.
My experience of TRE is that it is a gentle, self-empowering modality for dealing with past trauma and accumulated stress, without requiring one to verbalise past experiences and in so doing re-traumatise your system. I really enjoy working with this modality and witnessing the positive change it brings to my clients.

How does TRE® work?

When we tremor, the psoas muscle, which is our main muscle for ?ght and ?ight, gets to relax fully. This sends a signal to the brain that danger is over. The brain therefore stops ordering the release of chemicals and the body returns to a relaxed state. It is only when we are in a state of peaceful relaxation that we can draw on our ability to perform, to be creative, to learn and to achieve things in life.

If, through previous experiences, we remain trapped in a body that is: frozen or numb i.e. can’t feel emotions…we are dead to our lives and cannot enjoy the fullness of life. We remain disconnected and lonely, hyper-alert, anxious or angry and we may get caught in a cycle of violence and abuse.

In these states, which are caused by trauma, life can be very challenging. However, with TRE®, in a relatively short period of time, one can return to a healthy physical balance and a feeling of being alive and connected again.

From this new place of balance, one can start life afresh and be ready to learn new skills, take on new challenges and transform one’s life.
